New president appointed

Monday night’s meeting was action packed, with the AGM, Spring Print Exhibition and the Projected Image of the Month.  The AGM saw the appointment of Kate Burton as the new President of the Society. Kate takes over the role from John Casey who steps down after a two year term – John also held the position for another two year term several years ago.  The council and members of the society thank John for all the time and effort he has put into leading the society during his term as President.

This is Kate’s first time as President of DPS, or any society for that matter, and she is looking forward to the opportunity.  She will have the support of all members as she takes on this role, and especially that of the council. We look forward to the next meeting when Kate will take up her position as President.

After the AGM the Spring Print Exhibition was held and Paul Sorrell (Natural History) and Alan Dove (Open) were on hand to provide comments on the accepted prints.  Congratulations to Emiko Cowell, a relatively new member, who was awarded the Champion Open Print, and Craig McKenzie who was awarded the Champion Natural History Print.

The Dunedin Photographic Society AGM will be held on Monday 22nd Sept at 7.30pm and it would be great to have as many members as possible attend. It will start after the monthly competition is shown and should go no longer than 1/2 hour with the Spring Print Exhibition to follow. Alan Dove has made the selection for the exhibition and he will be attending the meeting to give us his comments.

Also, don’t forget the projected image of the month subject is Abstract. Entries need to be emailed to Kevin by 7:00pm Sunday 21st Sept.

As part of the launch of the ‘Otago Peninsula Birds A Pocket Guide’ booklet, Craig McKenzie has an exhibition of twenty bird prints currently on display at the Portobello Gallery.

The exhibition will be up for 3 weekends starting Saturday 30th Aug from 10:00am – 4:00pm.  The Portobello Gallery is located between the hotel and café. The
exhibition is supported by works with a bird theme from local artists including Dunedin Photographic Society  member Jenny Longstaff.

The ‘Otago Peninsula Birds A Pocket Guide’ booklet (featuring Craig’s bird photography) will also be on sale for $10. Proceeds going to Save the Otago Peninsula Inc (STOP).

Back to film

Film camerasIf you ask some members, film is the only way to go these days (Article: Why I’ve gone back to shooting film and why you should too—via Michael McQueen).

So when Meridee Watson turned up to a recent meeting with a large box of old film cameras, there was a surprising amount of interest.

A number of members left with one or two new (old) cameras to add to their collections.  We look forward to seeing some photos from them!
